Dear Jim:
MAgain congratulations on your continuing efforts. In reviewing disks 11 and J
H12 It is obvious you are getting some meaningful input. I've put a few M
Kcomments on this disk and intend to be a more regular contributer. I have N
Lsides 1-12 and am enclosing three disks plus postage for whatever they will
hold.
LPlease examine the concept on "Expanding Membership List" before putting it B
on disk. If you disagree or want some changes made let me know.
NOTE: MY ZIP CODE SHOULD BE CHANGED TO 44709

Re: Expand Membership List
MIn reviewing the list of TAWUG Members on either disk side 11 or 12 it seems P
Nwe all could profit by knowing more about each other's interests, etc. This M
Kwould help to foster more direct corresspondense, etc. Therefore somewhat I
presumptuously I am volunteering to help Jim in this regard as follows:
1. Request each Member print out, fill-in, and mail me the
following form.B
2. I will augment Jim's current member list at least bi-weekly
at first and then monthly.B
3. The changed files will be found on new disks as you receive
themF
4. Interests should relate first to AppleWorks usage with Secondary,
interests more professionally related.

COMMENTS: Believe that with membership cooperation TAWUG canB
be a valuable Association and potentially a lobbying B
force in the continued development of APPLEWORKS and D
APPLE related products. Jim Willis has done a marvelousF
job, is certainly of pioneering vitality, and merits someA
relief. I will assist in many ways but will have toC

SUBJ: MegaWorks by Megahaus
GRecent requests for info on mailmerge and/or spelling checker software H
Fdeserve at least another opinion. For both purposes
MegaWorks
is a I
Grespectable albeit imperfect product for about $75.00 through discount H
Fhouses. The Program disk is protected and a backup costs $15.00. It O
Mrequires AIIe or IIc with 128K minimum and one disk drive although of course >
two drives are preferred. Naturally, AppleWorks is assumed!
JA 52 page manual is adequate and probably won't be needed after using the P
Nprogram several times. An example disk explains main functions and should be L
Jreviewed. The Program disk starts and runs the program and a Dictionary H
Fdisk is used as the spelling checker. Any word processor file can be K
Ichecked. The original file is saved as MegaWorks Spell and the revision Q
Ounder the original file's name-both on the data disk containing your WP file. O
MSaving the original file is a protection feature and that file generally can O
Mbe deleted. The dictionary includes about 40,000 words and up to 10,000 can O
Mbe added. The additions occur as you find words which are correctly spelled N
Lbut are not recognized by the dictionary. You have the choice of adding or P
Nignoring any of these "new" words. In most of our special application fields O
Mthere inevitably are certain terms and "buzzwords" to be added. Once in the 4
dictionary they will be recognized when next used.
LMailmerge is very good with Desktop space the biggest limitation. With 55K O
Mthe limit is approximately 250 database lines (not records). Therefore when H
Fmerging the info from your database file it is partitoned by you into N
Lworkable size WP files. For serious "Mergers," consider expanding RAM (for O
Mincreased Desktop space). Data (words,numbers,etc.) can be inserted in your I
G"form" letter at any specified location. A "line" is one item under a ?
particular category, e.g. a lastname, a street address, etc.
LThere are many tips I've picked up through usage which are beyond the scope M
Kof this introduction. I will gladly respond to questions. In summary the N
Lpackage appears to be easy to use, generally does the jobs assigned, and in E
Cmy judgement a very useful cost effective addition to AppleWorks. 6
(Incidently this material was not spelling checked.)

SUBJ: Database File Structure
MThe AppleWorks Database feature is reasonably well explained in the tutorial P
Nand reference manuals however there are some tips which may be of help to new
users.
NWhen creating Categories add 3-4 called SPARE I, SPARE II, etc. These spares O
Mare invaluable as it you will probably want to add a category or more and to K
Iadd categories means reconfiguration of all reports. When I want to add L
Jcategories I simply change the spelling of one of my "SPARES" and reports P
Nmaintain their structure. This of course means a few extra categories appear O
Mwhen you are in the records mode. The SPARES can be deleted from any report %
and later inserted if found useful.
NFor most applications I use a dummy DB file which saves setup time. It works P
Nlike this. Create the DB with 10-15 categories using single letters for each M
Kcategory. For MegaWorks users preceed all of them with $$ and make one of M
Kthem a backslash without the $$. Then I create three reports. The first a N
L"Tables" report. The other two are "Labels" reports one for mailing labels L
Jand the second for merging in Megaworks. Each is configured for the most N
Lcommonly desired formatting which in my case is: CI 17, PW 8.5, LM 0, RM 0, M
KBM 0, TM 0, PL 25 (THE
MAX). For mailing labels I use: CI 12, PW 3.5, "0" N
LSpacing, and remove the header. For MegaWorks "Merge" labels-report I also L
Jremove the header and set the CI at 10 or 12 whichever is the most common N
Lsetting in letters. In designing a new application I've saved a great deal O
Mof time.
See DB.FORM on this disk for an example.
The file is configured N
Lfor MegaWorks but this will not interfere with applications without MW. For :
those who have or buy MegaWorks you are off and running.

SUBJ: Leroy's Cheatsheets
IFinally found a guide which for the money should be helpful to all Apple E
Cusers. For $5.95 each plus small shipping charge I purchased three L
JCheatsheets (guides for commands in a particular application). Each fits O
Maround the keyboard. They are laminated, have a light beige background with I
Gexcellant black printing and all commands in boldface. The three are: L
JAppleWorks, Applesoft Basic (DOS 3.3), and EPSON Printer. The AppleWorks O
MGuide is SUPER. I probably wouldn't recommend printer guides except for the L
Jperson who makes many changes to printer configurations (D.J. Lane). The H
Fadvertisement didn't specify Basic was in DOS 3.3 and as I use ProDos N
LApplesoft it will need some revisions. I intend to contact them about this M
Kas they may be working on the ProDos version. Two other benefits accrue. O
MOne is each guide has a blank backside which allows one to make all types of O
Mnotes, e.g. tips learned from TAWUG files. Also by covering the area around J
Hthe keyboard it keeps that area very clean. When I handle a lot of new P
Nprinted documents I invariably transfer some smudges to the keyboard surface.

SUBJ: RESPONSE TO W. B. JACKSON
Re: APPLEWORKS HINTS on creating letterheads.
You recommend copying a N
Lletterhead from one file to another. This of course takes very little time P
Nbut is somewhat more cumbersome than an alternate technique I use. On every N
Ldisk where a letter might be generated I have one or more LTR.HD files. In L
Jmy Personal disks I have three: LTR.HD.BOB, LTR.MARIAN (for my wife), and K
ILTR.HD.BOTH with both of our names. Each file is formatted for our most L
Jdesired letter styles. Put the one you want on the screen and change the L
Jname to the application at hand and "type away." On business disks I use
similar principles.
Re: AMORTIZATION FORMULI
KYou want to calculate an amortization table using a factor for compounding K
Iinterest on a semi-annual basis but still making monthly payments. I've O
Mdesigned a wide variety of Amortization Templates for AppleWorks but this is N
La challenge! Seriously I'm afraid I don't understand the reason for such a N
Lmethod. The normal procedure is to compute interest due from one period to J
Hthe next. The period interval is not critical that is it can be daily, H
Fmonthly, annually or any other period desired. Each payment normally N
Lincludes interest accrued from the previous payment plus partial payment on O
Mprincipal which increases each time with constant payment amounts. If one is K
Iusing a "Constant Payment to Principal" method, The principal portion is H
constant, whereas interest and the total payment decrease each period.
Now to your problem.
First I know of no formula which does what you ask. N
LOne method which might help is to take the balance due at a starting point, L
Jfigure the interest due after six months and divide it by six. Then take I
Gthat figure and add it "for 6 months" to whatever you want the partial P
Nmonthly principal payment to be. This means you will be charging (or paying) P
Nmore than the APR (Annual Percentage Rate) originally specified. This can be P
Nsolved by recomputing the APR each period. Another method is to put the note E
on a 6-month payment period and use normal amortization techniques.
MFor the record I'm giving you (and others) the basic formula for determining
a periodic constant payment:
PMT= ((i/p)*P)/(1-(1/(1+(i/p)))^(p*y))
Where: PMT - is the periodic payment:
i - is the annual interest rate in decimal form.
p - is the period ( 12 for monthly,&
2
semi-annual,etc.)/
P - is the original Principal Amount5
y - is the number of years of amortization
Example: i=.13 (for 13 %), p=12, P=100,000, y=20
PMT = ((.13/12)*100000)/(1-(1/(1+(.13/12)))^(12*20))
PMT = (.0108333333*100000)/(1-(1/(.0108333333))^240)
PMT = 1083.33333/(1-(.0753193986))
PMT = 1083.33333/.9246806014
=============A
PMT = 1171.58 where the first payment would include: C
============= 1083.33 interest and 88.25 principal
=============
Notes: I've used the AppleWork's commands for math
/ - divide
* - multiply+
^ - Exponent (raise to a power)>
( ) - Always err on the side of too many parentheses

Re:APPLE and APPLEWORKS Related Accessories, Compliments, Software, etc.
ISeveral suggestions have been made on compiling lists of books, magazine N
Larticles, software, and equipment, etc. related to AppleWorks and/or things P
Nwhich would compliment or increase the power of this fine piece of software. K
IExcellent concept so why not? Obviously Jim Willis has his hands full. O
MTherefore I'm proposing several Members cooperate by taking on a specialty. M
KWe certainly can profit if more than one person contributes in each area. @
For starters the following list could serve as our Categories:
CATEGORY FILE NAME
APPLE ACCESSORIES APLE.ACC.name<
APPLE EQUIPMENT APLE.EQ.name>
APPLEWORKS RELATED SOFTWARE AW.REL.SW.name<
BOOK LISTS AW.BOOK.name;
BOOK REVIEWS BK.REV.name<
DATABASE TIPS DB.TIPS.name<
** MAGAZINE ARTICLES MAG.ART.name:
PRINTERS PRINT.name=
PUBLIC DOMAIN APPLEWORKS SOFTWARE PD.AW.SW.name;
RAM EXPANSIONS AND HARDISKS RAM.HD.name<
SPREADSHEET TIPS SS.TIPS.name;
SUPPLIERS SUPLY.name <
WORD PROCESSOR TIPS WP.TIPS.name
KI've added tips for AppleWorks Sections and the filenames have room to add (
all or part of the contributor's name.
LFor starters I'm writing to
magazine for annual indexes to augment the G
Eissues I have. By explaining that over 300 Apple users will see the P
Ninformation I should be successful. I will then compile some of the relevant N
Linfo on a DB file. (See DB form named "A.PLUS.MAG.INDX".) Hopefully others O
Mwill pick one or more magazines for this purpose.
IF WE ALL
use this same L
JDB format for reporting on articles it will be easy for anyone to compile O
Mmaster Lists of those items of interest. I visualize similar efforts can be 6
made in some of the other areas from the above list.
MAlso I intend to contribute to DB and SS TIPS. The tips reports do not seem L
to need a DB form at least until we find a need to compile a list of them.
